Character Personality:

Phoenix Wright is a determined, observant, well-meaning defense attorney with an abundant amount of luck. Throughout his three years of being a lawyer, he's only taken 12 cases, each of them murder cases, and he has lost only once.

There are two big events that happened in Phoenix's past that define his character at the canon point he's being pulled from: one occurred when he was only nine years old, and the other happened when he was 21.

The first was an experience that involved Phoenix's old friends Larry Butz and Miles Edgeworth, though he'd only just met them at the time. The three of them were classmates in the fourth grade, and one day, one of the student's money for a trip was stolen. The theft had taken place during P.E., which Phoenix had skipped because he wasn't feeling well. Because of that, he was accused of stealing the money. His class decided he should be put on trial where everyone deemed he was guilty, even his teacher. However, Edgeworth came to his aid by putting his knowledge of law to use. Being saved by Edgeworth meant a great deal to Phoenix - in a very low moment in his life, he found hope in his friend, which inspired him to be like Edgeworth. Even years from that moment, both Larry and Edgeworth had forgotten, but the memory stayed with him.

What really pushed him to become a lawyer, however, was the event that happened in his university years. He was accused of murder and put on trial, then saved by a rookie attorney who later became his mentor. In this trial, his sweetheart Dahlia Hawthorne turned out to be the guilty party, betraying his entire idea of him. He truly cared a greatly for her - he did everything in his power to try to take the blame for her, and even ate an incriminating piece of evidence. But his lawyer's victory inspired Phoenix to always look for the truth as a lawyer, for the truth can save a life, maybe even more than one. Justice is worth more than living in blissful ignorance. This is evident as he switches from an art major to working towards a law degree, which he had been studying for on the side.

As he studied to become a lawyer, he found out that Edgeworth had instead taken the path to become a prosecutor, one that only cared about winning rather than the truth. This was the final nail in the coffin: while Phoenix tried to contact Edgeworth to see what was going on, he did not receive a reply, and so he came to the conclusion that he had to become a defense attorney in order to face his old friend and save him as he had been saved.

It's clear that Phoenix is deeply affected by things that others would deem insignificant. He understands that even the little things matter - this is especially apparent in his cases, as he picks apart testimonies by their loose threads and pulls them until they unravel the truth - and really gets into the heart of things. He's sentimental in a reserved way in that he doesn't openly express his affection for others, but it's displayed in his actions.

One of Phoenix's outstanding features is his unrelenting faith in his clients. Most of his cases involve strange circumstances, and usually, the evidence points to his client as the murderer. But Phoenix's faith in his clients drives him to fight for them. This faith also extends to his friends, who he would do almost anything for. He even tried to cross a burning bridge in order to save one of his best friends.

It's this faith and Phoenix's strong will to find the truth that helps him to victory. Even though he's only lost one case in his entire career, Phoenix is far from arrogant. Most of the time he struggles to find an even ground against a ruthless prosecutor who has it out for him, or clients who are hiding secrets from him, or witnesses who don't know what they're doing half the time. Phoenix is scrappy, to put it simply, and can think fast on his feet. While he's not always elegant, he is pretty talented at taking a case and turning it on its head.

Phoenix is normally kind and polite to others, almost to the point of being a doormat at times. He takes harsh comments and insults from witnesses and his opponents all the time without blowing up. That's not to say that he's totally collected all the time, but he is more tolerant than most. Though sometimes, he does have a relatively strong sarcastic streak. Most of his sarcastic side, however, is seen in his thoughts.

By this point in time, it's safe to say that Phoenix is used to dealing with many strange things - after all, his assistant and close friend is a spirit medium who commonly channels the spirit of his dead mentor - so he knows how to compose himself around others, but even he needs an outlet. Sometimes he's seen making odd comments about the scenery to himself and often has an argument with whoever's around about whether or not the nearby ladder is a stepladder or not.

Being friends with spirit mediums gives Phoenix a look into a more supernatural side of the world. His close friend Maya gifts him with a magical instrument at one point, one that allows Phoenix to see "psychelocks" when a person he's talking to is hiding something. Because of the ability granted by this artifact, Phoenix has been more aware of others' nervous habits and other such tics.

Phoenix's evolution throughout the three games reflects his growth as a lawyer and a person. At first he doesn't have a lot of faith in his abilities, especially since his first case is a murder case. One thing that stays consistent is his trust in his clients, and that is usually what keeps him going. As he progresses through his career, Phoenix makes less blunders and stands up for himself more often (though that's not to say he doesn't ever make a fool of himself, as he continues to get tripped up by his opponents in court, he has gotten better at getting back on his feet). He gains confidence and begins to understand that his job as a lawyer is to find the truth rather than victory, and this is especially obvious in the case involving Matt Engarde, a client of his who was actually guilty. He had the opportunity to let Matt go free and continue his winning streak, but he didn't, partnering up with Edgeworth instead and working together to find the truth. Eventually he comes to shoulder the burden of events of the past, and he takes them on with the necessary strength to save his best friend and tie up several loose ends. He handles the responsibility well, knowing entirely that only he was able to do so, but he also knew that help from his friends was necessary.

It's safe to say that, after the trials and tribulations of his career as a lawyer, Phoenix has come to understand the responsibility of his relations to the law, as well as justice and truth. Nothing ever comes easy to him, and he accepts that. Even if he blunders, all he needs to do is get up - second chances will be waiting for him, and if not, then he knows that with perseverance and determination, he can at least try to compensate for his wrong doings.

Phoenix rubs a hand over his face and finally allows himself to look at the clock. Wincing, he puts down the papers in his hands.

12:57 a.m. It's much later than he's expecting, but not a big surprise to him.

He yawns, then moves to stretch his arms, his back, finally standing and stretching his legs. With a quick glance to the corner of the room, he finds Maya sleeping at his desk, her arms splayed in front of her head. Her cheek is pressed against the surface of his desk, her mouth wide open. Phoenix decides it's a better idea not to let his gaze linger.

He really needs to stop taking cases right before the actual trial. His feet are sore from running around all day and he's pretty sure that there might be some rips in his suit from going through that forest to avoid security. Acceptable sacrifices, of course, but that doesn't mean he has to like them. At least he has a spare suit handy.

His gaze returns to the stack of papers he had just put down. They're just bits and pieces from his current case - photos of the scene of the crime, the autopsy report, a security notice, things like that. The court record is far from tidy, but when is it ever in order? He's not particularly worried, however. Phoenix knows that he'll be facing Edgeworth in court the next day, and even with a case he's barely scraped together, he knows that he should be just fine with his friend across from him n court.

His current client... He knows she's innocent. Even with the evidence against her, she has an alibi - while not strong, her word is proof enough. The issue is that no one else believes her. And who would, really? But Phoenix does. He has to. Because if he doesn't, then no one will, and she would be left to fall into despair... No one deserves that.

Returning to his seat, Phoenix shuffles through his papers one last time. Maybe he can get to bed by 1:30 at the latest. Well, not his bed, the office couch will have to do, but sleep is definitely something he needs to be functional in court the next day. One more look through the court record shouldn't be too bad, right?
